A leading engineering, environmental and planning consultancy has been awarded a contract with Northern as it embarks on a multi-million pound programme of train station improvement works.
North Wales-based Caulmert will provide design services to Northern as it invests more than £35m in the scheme, with works being undertaken at around 400 locations.
The phased programme of works will be carried out over four years, with Caulmert initially working alongside Northern in its central region, with nine train stations along the Wigan to Manchester route earmarked for improvements.
The programme includes upgrades to waiting shelters, waiting rooms and toilets, with additional seating, greater security and new, high-tech ticketing machines.
The aim is to improve customer and staff facilities at the station and the contract win will be the first time that Caulmert has provided its services to Northern.
David Murray, an associate at St Asaph-based Caulmert, said: “We submitted a quality proposal to Northern to be considered for their framework contract last year. This proposal proved to be successful making us eligible to tender for projects.”

Founded in 2009, Caulmert is on track to meet an ambitious growth plan that would see it employ 250 people by 2024. In addition to St Asaph, it also has offices in Bangor, Nottingham and Altrincham.
The firm, whose projects span the UK, from the Hebrides to the Isle of Wight, counts among its clients Willmott Dixon, Stoke City FC, Wynne Construction, TGI Fridays, Viridor and Airbus.
Its expertise in a variety of planning, environmental and engineering projects is supported by the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) processes and modelling to meet PAS1192 level 2.
