Cameron Fleming has expressed joy at putting theory into practice on major live projects as he reaches six months at Caulmert.
The apprentice civil engineer joined the engineering, environmental, and planning consultancy at its Altrincham office and has gone from strength to strength supporting several projects.
Working under the guidance of his line manager, associate civil engineer John White, Cameron is gaining hands-on experience using Autodesk Civil 3D and AutoCAD to create 2D and 3D models all within tight deadlines.
With A-levels in business, economics, and 3D design under his belt, he is also currently studying towards a Level 4 HNC in civil engineering on a part-time basis at Bolton College, delivered on behalf of the University of Greater Manchester.
Cameron said: “I’m really enjoying my time with Caulmert so far. Everyone is friendly and willing to help, and John is great at taking the time to explain things to me in a way I understand and with no judgement, so I’m thankful for the support.
“My responsibilities have also grown since I started and I’m now working on larger projects and strategically managing my time to complete tasks day to day, which is great.”
Having completed college in spring 2025, Cameron was inspired to join Caulmert as an apprentice after his father, the company’s associate director of structures Paul Fleming, highlighted the opportunity as a potential career pathway.
He continued: “I’ve been interested in engineering since I was 10 and loved design and technology when I was in secondary school, but I didn’t think it was something I could pursue because of the subjects I chose for A-levels.
“That changed once I learnt about this apprenticeship and during my interviews for the position, I explained that I like being creative and using apps to draw, which is something that has actually turned out to be a big part of what I do now.
“Looking ahead, I hope to continue my studies towards degree level after finishing my HNC and, in the long-term, earn a master’s in engineering management so I can secure a higher position and effectively lead a team through a project using my vocational and theoretical knowledge.”
John White, associate civil engineer at Caulmert, said: “It’s always fantastic to welcome young talent on board and help them kick-start their careers.
“Cameron’s enthusiasm, interest in design and technical drawing, and willingness to learn makes him a great addition to the skilled team here in Altrincham and the wider company, and I look forward to seeing him progress.”
