A St Asaph-based engineering, environmental, and planning consultancy has been awarded a contract as part of a renewable energy development.
Caulmert has been appointed by Sycamore Planning Ltd.
The proposed combined heat and power (CHP) facility will process waste wood, which would have otherwise gone to landfill, into electricity. Also on the 1.7 hectare site will be a waste water treatment plant.
Caulmert has been tasked with in-depth planning and permitting work for the development. Its role includes drafting the planning application, securing an environmental permit, and producing associated reports and studies including ecological, landscaping, transport and noise. It’s also responsible for organising and running public consultations.
Neil Foxall, principal planner at Caulmert, which also has offices in Bangor, Cheshire, Kent and Nottingham, said: “This is the type of planning job we like to get involved with because it makes a difference to the environment and will also boost the local economy.
“It’s an interesting scheme that has the capacity to divert 48,000 tonnes of waste wood from landfill each year, which will generate 1.2MW of electricity per annum, with more than 50 per cent exported to the grid.
“The processing of the waste wood will generate 16.5MW of heat, which will be used as part of the waste water treatment. Up to 65,000 tonnes of waste water can also be treated per year.
“In addition, the project will create 16 permanent jobs.
“We’re pleased to be playing a role in helping Sycamore Planning Ltd to develop this exciting scheme.”
The CHP facility and waste water treatment plant is being built on land adjacent to the Woodford recycling facility on Station Road, Warboys. Cambridgeshire. Construction is expected to take nine months if planning is approved.
Founded in 2009, Caulmert is on track to meet an ambitious 15-year growth plan that would see it employ 250 people by 2024. In addition to Bangor and St Asaph, it also has offices in Altrincham, and Nottingham.
Its expertise in a variety of planning, environmental and engineering projects is supported by the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) processes and modelling to meet PAS1192 level 2.
