BIM manager Tim Williams has lifted the lid on Caulmert’s journey to achieving the esteemed ISO 19650 certification.
Delving into the official process and the accreditation’s benefits, Tim gave a behind-the-scenes look to prominent trade publication, Construction Management.
Published by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), it is available both online and in print, and spotlights key developments shaping the UK’s built environment.
In his interview, Tim highlighted the vital role ISO 19650 plays in utilising Caulmert’s BIM expertise to minimise errors, clarify team member’s roles, and improve overall efficiency and coordination.
Having worked closely with the Building Research Establishment (BRE) to secure the certification within 12 months, Tim also encouraged other firms to pursue the standard.
He said: “Although we had worked to BIM Level 2 for years, ISO 19650 required a fundamental rethink. We couldn’t just evolve our existing practices; we had to start from the ground up.
“BIM Level 2 often left room for interpretation and inconsistency whereas ISO 19650 establishes a unified, international framework for managing information across the entire asset lifecycle.
“It’s no longer just about 3D modelling, but about how data flows between stakeholders, how decisions are informed, and how information is structured, shared, and governed. That’s a major shift in the right direction.”
Tim, who took up the role of BIM manager in 2023, personally oversaw the accreditation effort, drafting policies and procedures, monitoring compliance, testing new software, and managing Revit and 3D modelling across projects.
He was also keen to praise Caulmert managing director Mike Caulfield for being a driving force behind the ISO 19650 implementation.
He said: “Mike wants us to be at the forefront of the industry, he’s always looking at ways to future-proof the company and provide better value to our clients, so that’s the main reason we’ve done it.
“Now we’ve achieved certification, it does set us out from the crowd when companies come to us and look for pricing and things like that. It gives them a new level of assurance in our capabilities.”
What would Tim’s message be to those thinking about going down the same route?
He said: “The first thing I’d say is that it’s completely different to what you’ve probably been doing before.
“It took us about a year to get it all in place. And I’d also say, do it. Don’t be afraid of what’s involved in making the change. For us, it’s created a better working environment, better working processes, and a more efficient team.”
