Our Civil Engineering team is developing its capability in respect of fluvial modelling and flood risk, and we are looking for an Associate in our Manchester office to lead and develop our Water Business line.

The ideal candidate will take a lead technical role and will require a good understanding of the wider market and new and innovative developments within the UK flood risk and water sector. You will be leading on the delivery of hydraulic modelling projects, including 1D and 2D models for rivers and surface water. Your skills will include analytical use of GIS software. You will have good technical and project management skills and the confidence to lead technical work for our clients, as well as helping team members in developing their skills. We actively encourage strong, direct relationships with our clients, so you will also assist in building professional networks. Developing and winning new business opportunities will be an important aspect of your role.

You should be highly motivated and influential with the ability to provide sound and reasoned technical reporting. You will also share our passion for environmental solutions and can work with our clients in making the most of our opportunities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Developing both 1D and 2D hydraulic models (using ISIS, Flood Modeller, ISIS-TUFLOW, HEC-RAS as well as other hydraulic modelling software as required)
  • Preparation and data analysis using GIS software (ArcGIS, Maplnfo)
  • Project Management
  • Supporting and developing less experienced hydraulic modelling staff
  • Data Analyses
  • Report Writing and Presentation
  • Hydraulic design of river and flood defence structures (including culverts, weirs, stilling structures, fish passes etc)
  • Setting the technical direction for hydraulic studies
  • Preparation of project proposals, bids, fee estimates
  • Managing components of projects, taking responsibility for own resource and potentially resource allocation of others, managing subcontractors, quality assurance and client feedback and ensuring effective communication of any changes/modifications
  • Working in collaboration with other design disciplines to ensure the integrity of the overall design.
  • Ensuring compliance in the components of the project for which you have responsibility, including drawings, reports, specifications and studies
  • Building relationships with clients on projects
  • Developing and winning new business opportunities
  • Liaising with the Project Director or Manager and the client
  • Providing input to project team, leading by example to achieve sector goals and championing quality and innovation
  • Assisting and participating in developing yourself and other team members to their full potential
  • Gaining experience of and being familiar and compliant with, relevant H&S regulations and promoting a culture of awareness within the team
  • Undertaking commercial aspects of projects (contract, invoicing, debt management, client management etc.) relating to projects for which you are responsible
  • Performing other duties and responsibilities as required from time to time by your manager or wider company connections

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate analytical subject (Civil Engineering, Environmental Science , Water Resources, Engineering Hydrology)
  • A further Master’s degree in Engineering Hydrology, River & Coastal Engineering, Water Resources Technology
  • Chartered with CIWEM or ICE (or progressing structured training scheme in relevant discipline)
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills
  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Ability to manage commercial aspects of projects
  • Ability to lead and carry out Flood Risk Assessments and an in depth knowledge of UK flood risk policy (NPPF, SPP and TAN15)
  • Proven experience in fluvial hydraulic flood modelling
  • Proven GIS experience
  • Hydraulic design of flood risk management schemes
  • Carrying out technical reviews of hydraulic models and Flood Risk Assessments
  • Field Work as required on a project by project basis
