Caulmert Limited were appointed by McCarthy & Stone to provide structural and civil engineering design services for part 3-storey, 4-storey apartment building, in Kendal. The new building has 55 apartments (33 one-bedroom and 22 two-bedroom).
The site was previously occupied by a motor dealership (a Porshe) and lies between Kendal train station and the cricket club. Access is via the Shap Road (A6) running through the centre of Kendal.
The structural scheme involved precast concrete floor planks spanning onto loadbearing masonry walls. Steel beams were needed to achieve large spans over openings, and particularly for a section of the first floor above column-free communal areas on the ground floor.
The roof was part-flat using concrete slab units, and part-pitched using timber trussed rafters.
Foundations comprised concrete strips bearing onto the clayey, sandy soil formation beneath the existing Made Ground.
A feature entrance canopy and apartment walk-on balconies, framed out in steelwork, added to the scheme.
Caulmert also undertook the design of the drainage and the external hardstanding.
