Caulmert Limited was commissioned by MPH Construction Ltd to undertake a structural investigation of the listed former Baschurch railway signal box, Baschurch, Shropshire.
The existing structure is a grade 2 listed, two-storey masonry and timber building of traditional construction. The signal box was de-commissioned in 1999 and superseded by modern track circuits. The last few years have seen a very rapid decline in the condition with the loss of historic fabric and an accelerated decay to other parts.
The structural inspection was limited to the areas that were accessible/visible, and no intrusive investigation works were undertaken. Caulmert also undertook a measured survey to produce an existing layout and elevations. Our remit was to recommend mothballing works in such a way that it will minimise the rate of deterioration and the likelihood of vandalism until such a time that a possible reuse/community use can be found.
