Caulmert Limited were appointed by Paveaways to provide civil, structural and geotechnical engineering services for new KS1, KS2 and public hub buildings to Haughmond School. The new buildings superstructure is built using Passive House construction designed by others.
To support the superstructure a shallow foundation solution (strip footing and pad foundations) were provided. Due to the presence of variable made ground, the ground floor slab comprises a reinforced concrete cast in solid suspended slab.
Owing to existing trees near the north-west corner of the new KS1 building, the substructures within the trees influence zone are deeper (in case of strip footings and pad) and have been provided with void formers to prevent ground heave detrimental effects on new foundations and slabs.
Caulmert developed the foul and sustainable drainage solutions for the development and the design of site levels and pavement construction. Considerable uncertainty regarding the existing drainage led to an extensive survey and staged diversions and phasing of the drainage design. 3D modelling of cut and fill volumes provided the contractor with quantities to aid with cost planning. Section agreements for three junctions onto the site were submitted and approved. Close working with the Contractor enabled the benefits of design and build to be realised.
