The 275 yard long Moelwyn Tunnel on the Ffestiniog Railway was constructed in 1977. Located in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park the original reinforced concrete portals where always regarded by the railway company as temporary.
Caulmert undertook the civil and structural engineering design of the new masonry portals. A 3D point cloud survey was used as a basis for a Revit model to design the portal around the existing contours of the rock face.
Due to the remote location with no road access buildability was a key issue. All materials were carried to site by train and while the concrete specification had to be sufficiently robust for the mountainous location it also needed to consider the fact that it would be mixed on site in small batches.
