Caulmert were commissioned to provide a range of structural, civil and geotechnical engineering consultancy services for the redevelopment of the historic Munitions Shell Store into space for both an Innovation / Incubation Centre and Development Centre.
The project will provide laboratory and research space for HE and research Institutions, together with space for fledgling innovation businesses.
Caulmerts involvement includes an assessment of the existing steel structure and ground slab for reuse as part of the redevelopment. It also involved designing new elements and remedial works to the structure. Site investigations were also undertaken, by Caulmert, in order to establish ground conditions, which ultimately informed the foundation assessment.
The Shell Store formed part of the wider Hereford National Munitions Factory which manufactured explosive ordnance during both World War 1 and 2. The structure was subsequently left derelict with substantial dense vegetation and mature trees growing within the fabric of the building.
