Caulmert Limited prepared and submitted Options Selection Report and the Approval-in-Principle documents for National Highway’s approval in 2022. Detailed design will commence in early 2023, followed by support to the contractor during the construction phase.
A new motorway services area is proposed on the A1(M) between junctions 48 and 49 near Ripon.
As part of the new dumbbell junction development, a 40-metre single span overbridge is required that connects the 2 small roundabouts at the top of the slip roads.
The bridge will comprise 1.7m deep steel plate girders supporting an in-situ concrete deck with tarmac surfacing. Weathering steel is chosen to minimize the long-term maintenance over its 120-year design life.
To meet DMRB standards this bridge is designed as ‘fully integral’ i.e. without expansion joints or bearings. The deck and abutments will behave as a single entity and will be the subject of complex modelling to determine their degree of interaction.
The abutments themselves will be formed out of reinforced soil and faced with precast concrete panels, with galvanized steel strips attached to the rear, to achieve a near vertical profile.
