Caulmert Limited have a close working relationship with contractor Spatial Initiative and have provided them, with civil and structural engineering services for several school projects including Walker Primary School in Enfield, London.
Providing a new school in a conservation area, with its’ associated need for the building to be an integral part of the urban landscape was a challenge, as was the requirement to replace the existing buildings of a 420 pupil school in a live school environment. Using modular building techniques and modern methods of construction where are essential part of the project delivery process.
The building achieved the clients’ requirements for a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’ and excelled in the Waste, Land Use & Ecology, and Water BREEAM categories. Efforts to reduce the carbon emissions associated with construction were an important part of the assessment process and included a Life Cycle Assessment to ensure that the materials selected had a low environmental impact (including embodied carbon), over the life cycle of the building.
Carbon emissions were also reduced with the school embracing circular economy principles, utilising modular construction for the structure, with on-site cladding and fit-out. The modular construction allowed for minimal construction waste, whilst benefiting future disassembly, refurbishment, repair and upgrades, thus extending product and material lifetimes and reducing future construction and operational waste by avoiding materials disposed of prematurely.
