Caulmert were awarded a two-year project to monitor airborne salt at the proposed £14bn Wylfa Newydd nuclear power station on the Isle of Anglesey.
The environmental study monitored the levels of salt in the air on site and the effects it may have on a range of materials and coatings.
Caulmert’s research, carried out in partnership with global consultancy Amec Foster Wheeler, helped project developer Horizon ensure its construction machinery and equipment, was suitably protected from the local environment.
In addition to measuring degradation caused by airborne salt, the study involved monitoring salt deposition rates and the concentration of salt in the air. Caulmert also analysed and recorded meteorological data from an on-site weather station.
The construction period of the power station spanned a number of years, thus it is essential that research was undertaken to explore the potential local environmental impacts and looked to match the equipment specification accordingly.
