Caulmert was commissioned to provide a range of structural, civil and geotechnical engineering consultancy services on behalf of Wynne Construction Ltd for a new £4.95m school development at Ysgol Gwenfro, Wrexham.
The scheme involved the design of a new two storey building, demolition of existing school buildings and the creation of new external facilities.
Caulmert delivered a BIM compliant service and modelled and detailed the structure using Revit 2016 allowing full coordination of above and below ground drainage with the rest of the design team.
Innovative Ideas: Runoff for return periods greater than the 1:20-year event was designed to be stored above ground upon the school playing field, a more sustainable approach than attenuating entirely below ground. To do so, a small landscape bund was constructed along the playing field boundary to temporarily retain runoff within the site for return periods up to and including the 100-year +30% climate change event.
Liaison was required with multiple parties, including Natural Resources Wales, Wrexham County Borough Council and the wider design team to bring the design to fruition and allay concerns regarding flood risk.
